"We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but we rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty." ~ Maya Angelou

I'm glad you're here today.

Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable in unfamiliar settings can be both terrifying and exciting, depending on the situation and our own unique perspective . Entering into a counseling relationship is one of those settings I recognize as frightening in the beginning, but can be empowering just by scheduling your first appointment.

I believe there are a multitude of reasons for all human behavior. Over time, unhealthy behavioral patterns and ineffective forms of communication become "normal" in our lives; they were learned during childhood or used as coping mechanisms to help us make it through sensitive times. While these behaviors are difficult to recognize and adjust, awareness is the first step toward turning a corner and making improvements. I recognize that every person is unique; therefore I use a client-centered approach during sessions and see my clients as the experts in their lives. I also use cognitive behavioral therapy, techniques practiced in positive psychology and believe that mindfulness is beneficial as an everyday practice. Evolution is ongoing and the one thing we can rely on, is change. Even when life seems stagnant and feels hopeless, it CAN be more enjoyable and fulfilling.

My educational background and professional experience:

I have a bachelors degree in science, with a double major in sociology and psychology, and a masters degree in mental health counseling from Eastern Michigan University. 14 years of experience in the social services field as a family support case manager and 9 years as a licensed professional counselor have provided me with an inside look at the many challenges individuals endure as they navigate and secure the services for which they need and qualify. While walking beside clients throughout my career, I have repeatedly made note of the significant importance of patience and a non-judgmental environment to effectively work toward a trusting relationship and hope for change. I have worked closely with domestic violence survivors, families with children who have special needs, individuals struggling with anxiety and depression, and couples seeking help with communication and partnership. I have a passion for providing mental health services and guidance to individuals, families and couples, facilitating groups and providing a warm, welcoming space for clients to comfortably process life events.
